GreenLatinos, in partnership with Friends of the Earth, Roots, Greenpeace, and Graphika have researched and published two disinformation reports on climate disinformation in Spanish speaking communities.
The most recent report, “Rumores Renovables", was published in September 2023 and focuses on conversations surrounding renewables. The report aims to understand how anti-renewable narratives spread through the online ecosystem of Spanish-speaking Internet users, the groups and individuals who seed and disseminate these narratives, and the tactics these actors employ.
This report is a strong asset for the climate community to better understand the information these audiences are being exposed to. The report also serves to inoculate these users by taking the conversations and lessons learned from the report back into the community to remedy fiction with fact. This is especially important in the United States, where messages have been leaked to Latin American immigrant communities, and where the narratives posed on renewable energy in these communities can have repercussions in the upcoming 2024 general elections. The report highlights the role of translation in spreading anti-renewables content, as popular narratives are adapted to fit local contexts in Spanish-speaking regions. Actors also reuse content across multiple platforms to expand their reach, and some Facebook groups initially created to oppose specific pro-renewables policies evolve into hubs for general anti-renewables discourse.
